Gratitude is not just the appreciation of privilege, but the determination to make the position you are  in worthwhile. Here, Project Luminaire presented me with the opportunity to extend that privilege beyond myself and create tangible impact in the lives of others.

As a Filipino born and raised in Singapore, I have always known that my childhood looked very different from that of my parents, who grew up in the Philippines. Joining this project was, in many ways, my way of honouring them while giving back to a community that quite literally feels close to home. Whether it was installing solar lights, conducting lessons or preparing meals for the children, it reminded me that meaningful change can be built through small, yet intentional acts of service.

In fact, it is the small everyday moments that left the biggest impact on me. I fondly remember early mornings dancing and playing with the children during assembly, exchanging countless high fives, and even receiving little bracelets they had creatively woven from flowers picked nearby. It is these sincere and sweet gestures that transcend any language barrier, with the children having a remarkable way of making us feel welcomed, seen and loved. Where I thought I would be the one giving, I found myself receiving; in every smile, every high five, every flower bracelet, and every act of kindness. The love I had hoped to share was returned to me tenfold.

So amidst every drop of sweat, every parched throat and every mosquito bite, it all paled in comparison to the warmth and generosity that greeted us in every community. While Project Luminaire 13 began as an opportunity to serve, it became so much more than that – a journey that taught me that the greatest impact is not only found in what we give, but in the love, kindness and connections we receive along the way.

In just two weeks, the children, the communities we served and the 23 people I shared this journey with left an indelible mark on me. Deeply inspired by the kindness, joy and love that was shared so freely, this experience left a lasting imprint on the person I am today and shaped the way I view gratitude and service.
