LUMINAIRE
Ray Chong Cheng Yew
I was drawn to Project Luminaire because of its focus on education and creating long term lighting solutions in underserved communities. As a university student, I wanted to use my time meaningfully during the break, to step outside of my bubble and experience a different way of life. The trip turned out to be far more impactful than I expected. I also had the chance to interact and play with the local children which gave the entire experience a deeply personal touch.
I really enjoyed the human connection. The warmth and resilience of the community we worked with left a deep impression on me. There was something special about working side by side with both the locals and fellow volunteers to install the solar lights. The experience was equal parts fulfilling and humbling. I also enjoyed engaging with the children; even with the language barrier, their energy and curiosity made every moment feel meaningful.
Our team helped donate essential supplies to the school and installed solar lamp posts around the area. These improvements directly supported the children’s learning environment and safety. The solar lamps, in particular, now light up the paths at night, allowing students and families to move around more safely after dark. Knowing that our efforts contributed to both education and daily well-being was incredibly meaningful, it showed me how even simple solutions can create lasting impact.
Volunteering with Project Luminaire reminded me of the importance of empathy in action. It challenged my assumptions, made me reflect on the privileges I often take for granted, and inspired me to stay involved in meaningful causes even back home. I came back more grounded, more grateful, and more motivated to continue contributing, whether through time, skills, or advocacy.
